Neutrl - NUSD Staking
not rated yetIncident: reserve shortfall (August 2026). On August 13, 2026 Neutrl paused minting, redemptions and sNUSD staking "following circumstances affecting protocol reserves." On August 28 it disclosed only about $27M of liquid assets against roughly 53.4M NUSD outstanding; the rest of its book sits in strategy positions it called "not presently liquid," with no committed recovery amount or timeline. Neutrl says the cause was a strategy position, not a smart contract exploit. sNUSD was unpaused on September 17, and a Redemption Program opened the same day: NUSD is redeemed for 0.51 USDC per NUSD (sNUSD holders unstake to NUSD first) until about November 14, 2026. Neutrl does not guarantee that later recoveries will reach holders who redeem in this window, and sNUSD has paid no yield since August 11, 2026.
Neutrl is a market-neutral synthetic dollar protocol that issues NUSD — a synthetic dollar minted 1:1 against stablecoins (USDC, USDT, or USDe). By staking NUSD into sNUSD, users earn yield generated from Neutrl's institutional OTC arbitrage and delta-neutral trading strategies, without taking on directional market risk.
How Neutrl's NUSD staking works:
- Deposit stablecoins (USDC, USDT, or USDe) to mint NUSD at 1:1
- Deposited collateral is sent to institutional custodians (Fireblocks, Copper, Ceffu) for safekeeping and deployment
- Collateral is deployed into delta-neutral, duration-matched strategies — OTC carry trading, basis arbitrage, and onchain reference yield pools
- Stake NUSD into sNUSD to earn yield — the sNUSD/NUSD exchange rate increases over time as revenue accrues
- A 10-day cooldown period applied when unstaking sNUSD back to NUSD (cut to one second on September 17, 2026)
- Optionally lock NUSD, sNUSD, or LP tokens for 6–12 months for higher points and future emissions
Neutrl raised a $5M seed round led by STIX and Accomplice, with participation from Amber Group, SCB Limited, Figment Capital, and Nascent. The protocol launched publicly in November 2025 and initially scaled to ~$227M in circulating NUSD supply; about 53.4M NUSD was outstanding when it was paused in August 2026. Neutrl reported reserves exceeding circulating NUSD by ~3.9% in December 2025, but by August 2026 only about half of NUSD's face value was available in liquid assets.

Strategy
Not an active strategy: NUSD minting has been suspended since August 13, 2026 and sNUSD has paid no yield since August 11, 2026. The steps below describe how the strategy worked before the incident. The only exit at a known price is the Redemption Program: unstake sNUSD to NUSD, then redeem NUSD for 0.51 USDC before the window closes (expected November 14, 2026).
- Mint NUSD by depositing stablecoins
- Deposit USDC, USDT, or USDe to the Router Contract
- Receive NUSD at a 1:1 ratio in a single transaction
- Collateral is transferred to institutional custodians (Fireblocks, Copper, Ceffu)
- Stake NUSD into sNUSD
- Deposit NUSD into the staking contract to receive sNUSD
- Initial exchange rate is 1 sNUSD = 1 NUSD
- The sNUSD/NUSD ratio increases over time as yield accrues (e.g., 1:1.05 at Day 90, 1:1.2 at Day 365)
- Yield accrual is passive and automatic — no manual claiming required
- Earn yield from OTC and delta-neutral strategies
- Protocol generates yield from OTC arbitrage, basis trades, and funding rate capture
- Every epoch, sNUSD balances are re-indexed upward based on accumulated yields
- Unstake and redeem
- Unstake sNUSD — tokens are burned and you receive proportional NUSD based on the current exchange rate
- The unstaking cooldown was 10 days; it was cut to one second on September 17, 2026
- Since August 13, 2026 NUSD cannot be redeemed 1:1; the Redemption Program pays 0.51 USDC per NUSD, and secondary-market liquidity is negligible
Yield Source
Neutrl generates yield through a blended model combining institutional OTC arbitrage with liquid onchain delta-neutral strategies. The diversified approach allows the protocol to generate returns across different market cycles by targeting inefficiencies in both private and public markets.
Primary yield sources:
- OTC arbitrage (primary): Acquires tokens at discounted prices in private OTC markets (locked token deals), hedges with short perpetual futures, and profits from the spread between the discounted purchase price and public market value as tokens unlock
- Funding rate arbitrage: Captures positive funding rate differentials by holding spot positions and shorting equivalent perpetual futures
- Basis arbitrage: Exploits price differentials between spot and futures markets across venues
- Onchain reference yield pools: Deploys capital into liquid onchain yield sources as a complementary strategy
Yield characteristics:
- Yield accrual: Continuous — protocol revenue flows into the staking contract, increasing total NUSD reserves and causing sNUSD to appreciate
- Duration matching: Asset-liability durations are matched to reduce liquidity mismatches
- OTC advantage: Access to private market deals typically reserved for institutional investors, offering spreads unavailable to retail participants
The largest yield component came from OTC arbitrage — a domain typically inaccessible to retail participants. No yield has been distributed to sNUSD since August 11, 2026; see the August 2026 incident under Risk Analysis.
Strategy Limits
Deterministic Constraints
- NUSD minting is suspended; NUSD can only be exited through the Redemption Program at 0.51 USDC per NUSD, which redeems a wallet's entire NUSD balance after it signs an on-chain acknowledgement
- The sNUSD unstaking cooldown, originally 10 days, was cut to one second on September 17, 2026
- Locking positions (6–12 months) cannot be exited early
- Only stablecoins (USDC, USDT, USDe) accepted as minting collateral — no volatile assets
- Collateral held off-chain with custodians — not fully verifiable on-chain in real-time
Probabilistic Constraints
- OTC strategy performance depends on availability of discounted token deals and altcoin unlock schedules
- Funding rate and basis arbitrage yields vary with market conditions — low volatility or adverse rates reduce returns
- OTC-acquired tokens may face liquidity risk if market conditions deteriorate before hedges unwind
- Delta-neutral hedging can fail during extreme market conditions (exchange outages, flash crashes)
- The USDC reserve behind the Redemption Program is funded by Neutrl in tranches; redemptions revert if it runs short
- Neutrl admin accounts can change the redemption rate or pause redemptions at any time
Underlying Assets/Allocations
Reserves impaired — see the August 2026 incident
Neutrl disclosed about $27M of liquid assets on August 28, 2026 against roughly 53.4M NUSD outstanding; the rest of its book is held in strategy positions it describes as not presently liquid. The only on-chain backing is the USDC reserve funding the Redemption Program at 0.51 USDC per NUSD. Before the pause, Neutrl's June 2026 dashboard showed reserves at Fireblocks, Bybit and Binance and in OTC positions.
Risk Analysis
not rated yetPotential Risks
Based on the official Neutrl risk disclosures and independent assessments:
- Realized Loss (August 2026) - NUSD now redeems at 0.51 USDC. sNUSD holders first unstake at the sNUSD exchange rate (about 1.064 NUSD per sNUSD in October 2026), recovering roughly 0.54 USDC per sNUSD — about half of face value
- Recovery Uncertainty - Neutrl has not committed to any recovery value or timeline for its illiquid positions, and does not guarantee that later recoveries will reach holders who redeem in the current window
- Issuer Risk - CAVERNA AUCTUS INC. is the sole issuer of NUSD; this risk materialized in August 2026 when reserves could not cover redemptions
- OTC Counterparty Risk - Locked token deals depend on counterparty delivery; defaults or project failures could impair the OTC strategy's returns
- Funding Rate Risk - Negative funding rates on perpetual futures reduce delta-neutral strategy yields and may require reserve drawdowns
- Custodial Risk - Collateral held off-chain with Fireblocks, Copper, and Ceffu; custodian insolvency or operational failures would affect reserves
- Exchange Counterparty Risk - Trading strategies execute across centralized exchanges; exchange failures or insolvency could impact hedging positions
- Liquidity Risk - Secondary-market liquidity for NUSD and sNUSD has all but disappeared since the August 2026 pause; illiquid strategy positions cannot be sold quickly to meet redemptions
- Smart Contract Risk - Despite audits by Zellic and Pashov, smart contract vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited
- Regulatory Risk - Uncertain regulatory environment for synthetic dollar protocols could impact operations or restrict access
- Technology Risk - Risk of failures, hacks, exploits, or protocol errors affecting blockchain operations and user funds
Risk Analysis (3rd Parties)
Summary
Neutrl's sNUSD paid yield from a blend of institutional OTC arbitrage (discounted locked tokens hedged with perpetual futures) and delta-neutral trading. In August 2026 that model failed: Neutrl paused minting, redemptions and staking on August 13, then disclosed only about $27M of liquid assets against roughly 53.4M NUSD outstanding, with the rest of its book in strategy positions it called not presently liquid. There was no smart contract exploit — the loss came from the strategy itself, and the ZK-proofs, custodian attestations and Zellic/Pashov audits the protocol relied on did not flag it. Since September 17, holders can redeem NUSD for 0.51 USDC through Neutrl's Redemption Program (sNUSD unstakes to NUSD first), expected to close on November 14, 2026, with no guarantee that later recoveries will reach those who redeem now. sNUSD has paid no yield since August 11, 2026, and NUSD has no meaningful secondary market. This page now documents the incident; it is not an active yield opportunity.
See the Neutrl smart contract audits: Neutrl Documentation & Security
Smart Contract Audits: NUSD and sNUSD contracts were audited by Zellic and Pashov. No critical issues were identified in either audit. Neutrl described its reserves as confirmed by ZK-proofs, custodian attestations, and third-party audits; none of these flagged the illiquidity that surfaced in August 2026. The incident was not a smart contract exploit.
August 2026 Reserve Shortfall: On August 13, 2026 an admin key paused the sNUSD contract and Neutrl suspended minting and redemptions, citing "circumstances affecting protocol reserves"; liquidity in the main Curve NUSD/USDC pool was withdrawn almost entirely in the same window. On August 28 Neutrl disclosed about $27M of available liquid assets against roughly 53.4M NUSD outstanding, saying the remaining strategy positions were "not presently liquid" and that it could not confirm their timing or recovery value. Its dashboard had shown a book of about $137M in June 2026, held at Fireblocks, Bybit, Binance and in OTC positions. Neutrl attributed the problem to a position held within the strategy rather than a smart contract exploit. The transparency dashboard and custodian attestations did not flag the illiquidity before the pause.
Redemption Program (September–November 2026): sNUSD was unpaused on September 17, 2026 and its unstaking cooldown cut from 10 days to one second. The same day Neutrl opened a Redemption Program run by its issuer, Caverna Auctus Inc. The redemption contract burns a wallet's entire NUSD balance and pays 0.51 USDC per NUSD from a USDC reserve, once the holder signs an on-chain acknowledgement. The rate equals the ~$27M of liquid assets divided by the ~53.4M NUSD outstanding. By October 1, 2026, 13.5M NUSD had been redeemed for 6.9M USDC; the reserve held 6.1M USDC against 39.9M NUSD still outstanding, so Neutrl must add funds to honour every remaining claim at 0.51. A redemption reverts if the reserve is short, and Neutrl-controlled admin accounts can change the rate or pause the program. The window is expected to close on November 14, 2026, and Neutrl does not guarantee that any later recovery from the illiquid positions will reach holders who redeem now.
See the Messari analysis: "Neutrl: OTC & Delta-Neutral Strategies"
Institutional Backing: $5M seed round led by STIX and Accomplice, with support from Amber Group, SCB Limited, Figment Capital, and Nascent. Every counterparty is subjected to rigorous KYC and KYB checks, with all transactions governed by enforceable legal agreements. Institutional custodians (Fireblocks, Copper, Ceffu) are used for asset safekeeping.
OTC Counterparty Risk: The primary yield source depends on OTC deals with token projects and early investors. If counterparties default on delivery of locked tokens, or if token projects fail before unlocks complete, the protocol could face losses. The success of the OTC strategy is inherently tied to the health of the altcoin market and availability of discounted deals.
Off-Chain Reserve Opacity: Collateral is held off-chain with institutional custodians. While ZK-proofs and custodian attestations are used for verification, reserves are not fully verifiable on-chain in real-time. The issuer, CAVERNA AUCTUS INC., maintains sole authority over reserve management.
Track Record: Neutrl launched publicly in November 2025 and grew to ~$227M of NUSD supply before shrinking through mid-2026. Nine months after launch, a reserve shortfall left NUSD redeemable at about half of face value.
